By Mara Hernandez-Capili

Tiles are always used in residential and commercial Interior Design. Why? Because of the instant boost to a space which is in dire need of a makeover. Ceramic tiles vary in color that also makes it a good candidate in designing spaces. Tiles are very flexible, they can be placed as a floor finish, a wall finish and countertop finish. Noted Interior Designers play with this material to see where their imaginations would take them in designing a specific place.

Tiles as a wall pattern: bathroom walls are either laden with ceramic tiles from floor to ceiling, some use tiles up to the shower head only. Ceramic tiles make excellent wall patterns by combining different colors to create a specific color scheme. Mosaic tiles are also very famous when one wants to create a pattern in his wall. This makes the wall impermeable to water and makes it excellent fro areas that are constantly wet.

On the floor: Vigan tiles or indigenous tiles made of natural clay which is semi-vitreous to vitreous are very popular when you want to create a tropical concept for your room. They are brown in color which follows the natural earth tone. Some of them are unpolished to create a rustic look. Glazed variations are very advisable to use indoors along side with wooden furniture pieces and tropical Asian scheme accessories.

Tiles on countertops: Ceramic tiles are popular countertop materials for many years now. Modern variations now are composed of granite or marble slab. However, if one would like to achieve a retro-look for her kitchen countertop then ceramic tiles may just do the trick. Try using tiles with imprints on it and combine them with the other tiles, carefully laying them down to create the right pattern.

Tile prices vary depending on its style and on the intricacy of its design.
