First, look at the compensation plan. Can you understand it? What exactly must you do in order to be paid? Do you make retail commissions? Commissions for sponsoring new members? Residuals (overrides) on the sales volume in your organization?
Secondly, take a close look at the products or services. You want to see products that are both unique and in high demand. If the products are consumable, such as nutritional supplements or weight loss supplements, this will result in ongoing retail purchases.
Next, carefully examine the network marketing company. If it is a start up, there is more risk to you as a new distributor. After about three years in business, a company should be in a solid growth phase. If it is still struggling after three years, consider a different company. Use Google or Yahoo to research any reported fraud or misconduct. If the company is publicly traded, like Herbalife or Mannatech, for example, you should be able to uncover regulatory problems or poor stock performance.
Finally, don't forget to choose your team and your sponsor with great care. Don't overlook this last detail. No matter how talented, skilled and determined you are to succeed, a sponsor who is arrogant or unhelpful will impede your progress.
If your upline is clueless, how are you going to be supported in success? If you have called several people to inquire about opportunities, have they responded in a timely manner? Do they promptly return emails? Do you resonate with their personality?
Look for a sponsor who knows and understands Internet Network Marketing. This is a relatively new thing for your industry. You will want guidance to do this correctly. Question your would-be sponsor about how they will train you and mentor you in this new direction. Will they help you with a personal web site? Show you how to set up your own autoresponder? Teach you how to use MySpace and Youtube to generate leads and business partners?
If at first you don't find an authentic, knowledgeable leader, keep looking. It is worth the effort to carefully choose your new mlm opportunity AND your new mentor...both will be vital to your success.
